Germany Records 231 Islamophobic Incidents in First Half of 2026
Official data reveals hundreds of anti-Muslim crimes, though advocates warn the true scale is much higher due to widespread underreporting.
Germany has recorded 231 anti-Muslim criminal offences in the first half of 2026, according to newly released government data.
The figures were disclosed in response to a parliamentary inquiry by Green Party lawmakers and cover cases officially classified under the “Islamophobia” category of politically motivated crimes. While the total represents a decrease from the previous year—when authorities logged 489 incidents in the first half of 2025 and 543 in the second half—officials caution that the 2026 numbers are provisional and subject to change due to late reporting.
The breakdown of the incidents highlights a wide range of abuses targeting the Muslim community. Among the 231 offences, authorities documented 44 cases of incitement to hatred, 11 violent attacks, nine cases involving coercion or threats, and 13 incidents involving symbols of unconstitutional organisations. Additionally, 33 of the crimes were committed online, three involved property damage, and 47 were classified as “other offences.”
Despite the high number of recorded incidents, accountability remains virtually nonexistent. Police identified 127 suspects in connection with the crimes but made zero arrests.
Muslim advocacy groups argue that the official statistics only capture a fraction of the daily reality faced by Muslims in Germany. Ali Mete, secretary-general of the Islamic Community Milli Gorus (IGMG), emphasised that the data fails to reflect the full scope of the problem, as many victims do not report attacks to the police, or authorities fail to classify the crimes as anti-Muslim.
“231 registered criminal offences in the first half-year alone are 231 cases too many,” Mete told the news outlet IslamiQ, warning that anti-Muslim hostility remains a severe and systemic issue across the country despite the slight dip in official numbers.
