Genocide Experts’ Association Declares Israeli Actions in Gaza Constitute Genocide
Resolution by leading scholars strengthens legal case against Israel as death toll surpasses 63,000
Palestine, PUREWILAYAH.COM — The world’s foremost body of genocide scholars has passed a landmark resolution affirming that Israel’s military campaign in the Gaza Strip meets the legal definition of genocide under international law.
The International Association of Genocide Scholars (IAGS), composed of leading academics and legal experts, announced that 86 percent of its voting members supported the resolution, which explicitly states: “Israel’s policies and actions in Gaza meet the legal definition of genocide in Article II of the United Nations Convention for the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (1948).”
The resolution comes as Israel faces a separate genocide case before the International Court of Justice in The Hague, initiated by South Africa.
While Israeli officials continue to justify the campaign as an act of self-defense, critics and legal experts point to systematic targeting of civilians, destruction of homes, and deliberate obstruction of humanitarian aid as clear evidence of genocidal intent.
Since October 2023, Israel’s assault has killed an estimated 63,557 Palestinians, displaced nearly the entire population, and devastated the territory’s infrastructure.
Resolution Details and Humanitarian Toll
The IAGS resolution lists multiple acts that meet the threshold of genocide, including deliberate attacks against civilians — especially children — starvation, denial of humanitarian aid, deprivation of water and fuel, sexual and reproductive violence, and mass forced displacement.
These actions, coupled with the widespread destruction of homes, schools, and hospitals, have plunged Gaza into a humanitarian catastrophe.
The Ministry of Health in Gaza reports over 160,660 injuries alongside the death toll, with 11,426 killed and 48,619 wounded since March 18, 2025 alone.
Hamas spokesperson Ismail al-Thawabta welcomed the resolution, saying it reinforced “documented evidence and facts presented before international courts” and placed a “legal and moral obligation” on the international community to act.
Global Academic Consensus Emerging
Melanie O’Brien, IAGS president and professor of international law at the University of Western Australia, described the decision as “a definitive statement from experts in the field of genocide studies that what is going on on the ground in Gaza is genocide.”
Sergey Vasiliev of the Open University in the Netherlands said the genocide determination “has become mainstream within academia, particularly in the field of genocide studies.”
Despite mounting legal findings and academic consensus, Western governments — led by the United States and its allies — have continued to shield Israel from international accountability, vetoing United Nations resolutions and maintaining military and political support for its ongoing assault. (PW)
