GAZA — The besieged Gaza Strip is staring down the barrel of a deepened humanitarian catastrophe and a renewed risk of famine following a severe reduction in food assistance by the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP).
Gaza’s Government Media Office issued a stark warning on Monday, condemning the WFP’s decision to cut food aid by approximately one-third due to alleged budget constraints. The drastic reduction directly threatens the food security of around 500,000 vulnerable Palestinians who rely on international assistance for survival.
In an official statement, the Media Office emphasised that these funding shortages will drastically aggravate hunger across the coastal enclave. The office placed the primary blame for the escalating food crisis squarely on the Israeli regime, citing its suffocating blockade and severe restrictions on the movement of goods and people.
“The reduction in food assistance affecting approximately 500,000 people could have serious consequences for families already struggling to obtain sufficient food and other essential supplies,” the statement read, warning of the dire implications as the harsh winter months approach.
Urgent Appeals to the Islamic Ummah and International Community
With the humanitarian situation deteriorating rapidly, Gaza’s officials have issued an urgent appeal to Arab and Islamic countries, calling for immediate financial intervention to sustain relief efforts. The Media Office stressed the critical necessity of establishing both land and maritime humanitarian corridors to bypass Israeli obstruction and facilitate the direct delivery of life-saving supplies to the Palestinian people.
Furthermore, the office called upon the United Nations to exert tangible pressure on the occupying Israeli regime to fully reopen all border crossings. Ensuring the uninterrupted flow of food, shelter materials, and medical supplies is deemed essential to preventing a total collapse of living conditions in the Strip.
The WFP’s announcement has cast a shadow over the sustainability of humanitarian operations in Gaza, where external aid remains the sole lifeline for the majority of the population. Gaza’s Government Media Office reiterated its demand that international institutions and regional governments mobilise immediate funding and facilitate access to halt the engineered starvation of the Palestinian people.
