Ex-Netanyahu Security Chief Arrested in U.S. Child Solicitation Sting
Former Netanyahu aide and Washington police lieutenant Matthew Mahl was arrested in Maryland after allegedly arranging to meet a 15-year-old boy in an undercover sting.
United States, PUREWILAYAH.COM — U.S. authorities have arrested Matthew Mahl, a former security chief for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and a lieutenant with the Washington Metropolitan Police Department, on charges of soliciting a minor and attempting to obtain child sexual abuse material.
Mahl, 47, was detained in Maryland following an undercover operation conducted by the Harford County Sheriff’s Office, according to court documents and multiple media reports.
The case has drawn widespread attention because Mahl occupied positions of trust both within the U.S. law enforcement apparatus and in the security circle surrounding Netanyahu, whose government has been repeatedly accused of grave violations of international law against Palestinians.
Undercover Operation Exposed Alleged Online Grooming
According to charging documents, Mahl allegedly communicated for nearly a month with an undercover detective posing as a 15-year-old boy named “Nate.”
Investigators said the conversations took place through Reddit and text messages. Throughout the exchanges, the undercover officer repeatedly made clear that he was underage.
Despite this, prosecutors say Mahl continued sending sexually explicit messages and photographs and eventually arranged to meet the boy in Harford County, Maryland, for sexual activity.
Deputies arrested him immediately upon arriving at the prearranged meeting location.
Prosecutors: “A Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing”
During a bail hearing, prosecutors described Mahl as “a wolf in sheep’s clothing,” arguing that the allegations were especially disturbing because he served as a senior police officer entrusted with protecting the public, including children.
Court records indicate Mahl acknowledged the legal risk during the conversations, reportedly telling the undercover officer that he “could get in trouble” because he was an adult and law enforcement officer, while the teenager would not because he was “a child.”
He allegedly added that he had “it all to lose.”
A judge ordered Mahl held without bail.
Metropolitan Police Department Suspends Mahl
The Metropolitan Police Department of the District of Columbia confirmed that Mahl has been placed on administrative leave and stripped of his police powers.
In a statement, the department said the allegations were “extremely disturbing” and directly contradicted the values the agency claims to uphold.
The department also announced that its Internal Affairs Division would launch a separate administrative investigation after the criminal proceedings conclude.
Mahl previously served as chairman of the D.C. Fraternal Order of Police between 2016 and 2018.
Charges and Ongoing Investigation
Mahl faces charges of sexual solicitation of a minor and solicitation of child sexual abuse material. Authorities say the investigation remains ongoing and additional details could emerge as the case proceeds.
The arrest has intensified scrutiny over misconduct among officials occupying sensitive security and law enforcement positions in the United States and among figures linked to Israeli political leadership.
Advocates for survivors of sexual abuse said the case is likely to further erode public trust in institutions that claim to protect vulnerable communities while repeatedly shielding individuals accused of serious crimes.
Mahl is scheduled to return to court later this month. (PW)
