In a stark display of the growing friction within the Western bloc, Denmark has deployed a new wave of conscripts to Greenland to bolster its military presence in the Arctic. The move comes as Copenhagen braces against the increasingly aggressive and expansionist rhetoric emanating from the United States under President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly threatened to “acquire” the autonomous Danish territory.
The Danish troops are currently participating in “Arctic Endurance,” a rigorous military exercise aimed at training soldiers to operate and survive in Greenland’s harsh, unforgiving terrain. The deployment operates under an expanded military service program and is integrated into NATO’s newly established “Arctic Sentry Mission,” an initiative launched this year specifically to fortify the alliance’s presence in the region following heightened tensions over US demands.
While Washington and its European allies frequently champion the “rules-based international order,” the US administration’s stance on Greenland has laid bare a different reality. Trump has repeatedly expressed his desire to seize the resource-rich island, dismissing the sovereignty of both Denmark and Greenland as mere obstacles. The situation escalated significantly on January 7, 2026, when the White House announced that the acquisition of Greenland remains “under discussion” and notably refused to rule out the use of US military force to occupy the island. This followed Trump’s December 22, 2025 appointment of Louisiana Governor Jeffrey Martin Landry as a special envoy for Greenland, signalling Washington’s intent to force the issue.
The US push for control over Greenland has not been limited to military and political bullying; it has also manifested through economic incursions. In July, Greenlandic authorities issued a severe warning to a Texas-based oil firm, Greenland Energy, which has known ties to Trump’s allies. The company had brazenly transported drilling equipment ashore in eastern Greenland without securing the necessary governmental approvals, prompting accusations of unauthorised exploitation of the territory’s resources.
Both Copenhagen and Nuuk have unequivocally rejected Washington’s demands, characterising them as absurd bullying and a blatant violation of their sovereignty. As the US continues to flex its imperial muscles in the strategically vital and resource-heavy Arctic, Denmark’s military mobilisation signals a firm refusal to bow to American hegemony and neo-colonial ambitions.
