Curfew Imposed in Sweida as Syrian Army Prepares to Enter City Center
Authorities cite need to restore order and protect civilians amid rising tensions and escalating violence, Druze religious leader rejects security presence.
Syria, PUREWILAYAH.COM - The Syrian Interior Ministry announced a curfew in the city of Sweida beginning at 8:00 am local time on Tuesday, with no set end date.
The measure comes as military and security forces prepare to enter the city center following recent clashes that left dozens dead.
Brigadier General Ahmad al-Dalati, head of internal security in Sweida, stated that the Ministries of Interior and Defense have jointly deployed forces aimed at “protecting civilians and restoring order.” He urged residents to remain indoors and avoid aiding armed groups who might use residential buildings for cover.
Authorities Call for Local Cooperation Amid Tensions
Brigadier General al-Dalati called on residents and local leaders—particularly religious authorities and heads of armed factions—to take responsibility for public safety and to fully cooperate with the state.
He emphasized that such coordination is crucial to prevent further deterioration of the situation. Simultaneously, the Ministry of Defense’s Media and Communications Directorate reported that Syrian Army units are pursuing armed groups near the city’s outskirts in an effort to stabilize the area.
Druze Spiritual Leader Rejects Security Intervention
Sheikh Hikmat al-Hijri, the spiritual leader of Syria’s Druze community, publicly rejected the entry of state security agencies into Sweida.
He claimed that while these forces claimed to enter for civilian protection, they instead shelled border villages and supported what he described as “takfiri gangs,” utilizing heavy weaponry and drones.
This criticism adds to growing concerns among residents about the role of state forces in exacerbating the conflict rather than resolving it.
The Defense Ministry, meanwhile, urged civilians to report the movements of armed groups believed to be retreating into the city center. (PW)
