BAGHDAD — Iraq’s largest parliamentary bloc, the Coordination Framework, has issued a stark warning regarding ongoing foreign conspiracies designed to undermine the Popular Mobilisation Units (PMU)—reverently known as Hashd al-Sha’abi—and destabilise the nation’s hard-won security.
Ali al-Zubaidi, a prominent member of the Shia-led bloc which commands a decisive majority of 185 out of 329 seats in the Iraqi parliament, stated on Friday that sinister foreign schemes are currently underway to strip the Hashd al-Sha’abi of its critical security role.
“These evil foreign schemes are being orchestrated by parties deeply discontented with the security and stability that Iraq has achieved,” Zubaidi declared.
He emphasised that hostile entities are utilising multiple channels, including political manoeuvring and relentless propaganda campaigns, to target the PMU and weaken its integral position within Iraq’s official military and security apparatus.
Crucially, Zubaidi highlighted the direct link between these foreign-backed campaigns against the Hashd and a suspicious uptick in activities by the remnants of the Takfiri Daesh terrorist group. He warned that subversive elements are actively attempting to reactivate sleeper cells across the country, seeking to exploit any perceived security vacuum created by attacks on the PMU to spread chaos and commit atrocities.
“The Popular Mobilisation Units, in accordance with the Constitution, constitute the unshakeable mainstay of Iraq’s defence structure,” Zubaidi underscored. He firmly noted that any attempt to dissolve, restrain, or marginalise the heroic fighters of the Hashd al-Sha’abi directly benefits subversive agendas and breathes life back into defeated terrorist organisations.
In response to these dual threats, the lawmaker called upon the Iraqi government and national security officials to exercise the utmost vigilance. He urged a significant intensification of intelligence operations to neutralise foreign conspiracies, protect Iraq’s national sovereignty, and safeguard the legacy of the martyrs who defeated the Takfiri menace.
The statement reflects a growing consensus within the Iraqi resistance and political leadership that the Hashd al-Sha’abi remains an indispensable pillar of the nation’s sovereignty and a primary deterrent against both imperialist interference and the resurgence of extremism.
