Reactions to European Snapback Mechanism Move
Following the sending of a letter by the European troika (the United Kingdom, France, and Germany) to the United Nations Security Council on Thursday, 28 August 2025, announcing their intention to activate the snapback mechanism against Iran, in addition to China, Russia has also shown firm reactions in recent hours.
These reactions, mostly expressed through official and diplomatic statements from Moscow, have focused on the illegality of Europe’s action and on efforts to preserve diplomacy.
In this regard, Mikhail Ulyanov, Russia’s Permanent Representative to International Organizations in Vienna, described the action of the three European countries party to the JCPOA in seeking to restore United Nations sanctions against Iran as “a big mistake.” (PW)
