China Backs Cuba’s Sovereignty as US Escalates Pressure
Beijing Reaffirms Support Against External Interference Amid Deepening US–Cuba Tensions
China | PUREWILAYAH.COM - China has publicly reiterated its support for Cuba’s sovereignty and security as diplomatic tensions escalate between Havana and Washington, emphasizing opposition to external interference and foreign coercion.
The strong show of support came during a visit to Beijing by Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla, Cuba’s foreign minister, who held talks with Wang Yi, China’s top diplomat.
Beijing: Firm Support for Cuban Independence
China’s position was underscored by statements that it:
“firmly supports Cuba in safeguarding its national sovereignty and security”
“opposes unwarranted interference by external forces”
and rejects any attempt to deprive the Cuban people of their right to survival and development, according to China’s Foreign Ministry.
Wang also said China is ready to provide assistance to Cuba “to the best of its ability,” highlighting Beijing’s long-standing diplomatic solidarity with Havana.
Cuban officials described the relationship between the two countries as “special and strategic,” reflecting deep historical ties between fellow socialist nations.
Escalating US Pressure and Regional Fallout
The Chinese backing comes amid heightened pressure from the Donald Trump administration, which has recently taken punitive measures against Cuba.
In recent weeks:
The US has taken steps to block oil shipments to Cuba, part of a broader campaign of economic and diplomatic pressure.
Cuba has declared an “international emergency” in response to US actions, describing them as threatening to national security and sovereignty.
Regional governments, including Mexico, have resisted US pressure to halt oil deliveries to Cuba, underscoring the widening diplomatic fallout.
The tensions intensified after the US detainment of Nicolás Maduro, Venezuela’s president and Cuba’s long-time ally, which Cuba’s government condemned.
Cuba’s Rejection of US Accusations
Cuban leadership has rejected Washington’s characterization of its government as a security threat. President Miguel Díaz‑Canel has reiterated that Cuba is not a terrorist state nor poses any security risk, and has called for dialogue “without pressure and preconditions.”
While the US continues to escalate rhetoric and sanctions, Havana has insisted that its sovereignty and independence are non-negotiable, condemning what it describes as a blockade aimed at strangling the island’s economy. (PW)
