Brazilian President: Biden Wanted to Destroy Russia
Brazilian President Lula criticizes Western approach to Ukraine war, says Biden is fueling escalation, urges return to diplomacy and peace
Brazil, PUREWILAYAH.COM - In a candid interview with Le Monde on Tuesday, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva claimed that former U.S. President Joe Biden sought to see Russia "destroyed" during his time in office.
The remark comes amid Lula's continued calls for diplomacy and a negotiated settlement to the ongoing war in Ukraine.
"Joe Biden, with whom I spoke at length, thought Russia needed to be destroyed," Lula said, without specifying the exact timing of their conversation. He criticized the narrative that portrays Moscow as the sole aggressor, adding, "Western countries also bear part of the responsibility."
Lula, a consistent advocate for peace talks, expressed concern over the current trajectory of Western policy, which he said is focused more on militarization than reconciliation.
Europe Has Aligned With Washington, Lula Warns
The Brazilian leader lamented what he described as Europe's abandonment of its historical role as a geopolitical moderator.
"Europe, which for a long time embodied a middle way in the world, has now aligned itself with Washington and is spending billions on rearmament. That worries me," Lula told the French newspaper. "If all we talk about is war, there will never be peace."
His comments reflect broader dissatisfaction among Global South nations that view the conflict as a symptom of deeper power struggles between global blocs, rather than a purely regional dispute.
Conflict Viewed as Proxy War by U.S. Officials
Russia has consistently described the Ukraine war as a Western-led proxy conflict aimed at undermining Moscow. That view has recently gained some acknowledgment within the United States.
Keith Kellogg, former National Security Advisor to Vice President Mike Pence, said last week that President Vladimir Putin was "in a way" correct in his assertions. Similarly, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated in March, "Frankly, it’s a proxy war between nuclear powers – the United States, helping Ukraine, and Russia."
These statements highlight growing tensions within the American political establishment over the scope, purpose, and sustainability of Washington's involvement in the war.
Former U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly condemned President Biden for what he calls "reckless" spending on Ukraine, claiming the conflict "should have remained a European situation."
He has used campaign events to argue that only he could resolve the war quickly, even though he later acknowledged such claims were exaggerated.
Despite renewed diplomatic activity, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov warned that it would be "incorrect" to expect immediate breakthroughs. (PW)
