Baghaei: Some Understandings Reached, But It Doesn’t Mean an Agreement Is Imminent
Tehran says several issues have been resolved through indirect negotiations mediated by Pakistan, but stresses that no final agreement is close as U.S. position shifts continue to obstruct dialogue.
Iran, PUREWILAYAH.COM — Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei announced on Monday that Iran has reached understandings on several issues during indirect negotiations with the United States, while firmly denying claims that a final agreement is imminent.
According to Al-Manar, Baghaei stated that the recent developments followed “several weeks of talks through the Pakistani mediator,” noting that several other countries had also participated in facilitating the process.
Tehran Denies Imminent Agreement
Baghaei clarified that while progress had been made on a number of disputed issues, this should not be interpreted as a sign that an agreement is about to be signed.
“It is true that understandings have been reached regarding many of the issues under discussion, but saying this means an agreement will soon be signed is something no one can claim,” he said.
The Iranian spokesman also criticized what he described as repeated shifts in Washington’s positions during the negotiations.
“We are witnessing repeated changes in the positions of American officials, and this process obstructs any dialogue,” Baghaei stated.
Iran Says It Will Continue Diplomacy “With Open Eyes”
Despite the obstacles, Baghaei affirmed that Iran would continue pursuing diplomacy while remaining fully alert to previous experiences and threats.
“Just as we acted powerfully on the battlefield, we will also continue in the field of diplomacy with open eyes, and while taking previous experiences into consideration, in order to protect Iran’s national interests,” he said.
Lebanon Front Included in Any Understanding
Baghaei further emphasized that ending the war across regional fronts — especially in Lebanon — forms part of the broader understandings connected to any future agreement.
“The cessation of war on all fronts, especially Lebanon, is one of the elements of understanding in any agreement,” he stated.
The Foreign Ministry spokesman also pointed to Iran’s confrontation with its enemies during the recent conflict, declaring that the country had successfully resisted pressure from powers armed with nuclear weapons.
“A country that managed to defend itself for 40 days against two regimes armed with nuclear weapons, and forced the enemy to regret its objectives, is certainly capable of demonstrating its strength and authority in the next stage,” Baghaei said.
Strait of Hormuz Remains Under Regional Responsibility
Regarding the Strait of Hormuz, Baghaei stressed that management of the strategic waterway remains the responsibility of the coastal states.
“There is no discussion in this agreement regarding details. The way the Strait of Hormuz is managed concerns the coastal countries overlooking it,” he said.
He added that Iran remains in contact with several countries to establish mechanisms that ensure maritime security while safeguarding the interests of the regional states and the wider international community. (PW)
