During a specialised international session titled “Imam Husayn (AS) from the Perspective of Religions and Denominations,” held on the sidelines of the grand Arbaeen pilgrimage, Ayatollah Reza Ramazani highlighted the profound global dimensions of the Ashura uprising.
Addressing an audience of international thinkers and scholars, the Secretary-General of the AhlulBayt (AS) World Assembly introduced the Husayni school of thought as a “trans-religious model” and the ultimate “saving prescription for humanity” to break free from the yoke of global oppression and establish true justice.
A Universal Beacon, Not a Sectarian Figure
Emphasising the universal nature of the Master of Martyrs (AS), Ayatollah Ramazani stated that the light of Imam Husayn (AS) does not belong exclusively to Shiites or Muslims. Rather, he is a divine role model for all of humanity and the monotheists of the world.
Praising the academic efforts of Ashura researchers, including prominent Christian thinker Professor Chris Hewer, Ayatollah Ramazani noted that any society today seeking liberation from tyranny must hold fast to the “lamp of guidance” ignited by the Saviour of Humanity. The session also featured the unveiling of the book Hussain and the Struggle for Justice, attended by various international intellectuals.
Rooted in Human Nature and Rationality
Ayatollah Ramazani elaborated that the movement of Imam Husayn (AS) is deeply rooted in human nature (fitrah) and rationality. He explained that Islam, in its beliefs, ethics, and rulings, resonates with the innate nature of mankind. Referencing the Quranic concept of a “role model” (Uswah), he noted that through his ultimate sacrifice, the Imam (AS) taught humanity the profound lesson of social and divine responsibility, forever cementing the historic truth of the victory of blood over the sword.
Jihad as an Act of Divine Mercy
Addressing the heavily distorted portrayal of Jihad in Western media, the Secretary-General clarified that Jihad in Islam is fundamentally a sacred matter rooted in “mercy.” Highlighting its immense importance, he pointed out that approximately 400 verses in the Holy Quran are dedicated to Jihad and resistance—a level of emphasis not even given to core pillars like prayer or fasting.
Ayatollah Ramazani described Jihad as the natural, rational response to systemic oppression, affirming that the Almighty has granted permission and dignity to the wronged to resist and emerge from the domination of arrogant oppressors.
The Embodiment of Majesty and Beauty
Concluding his remarks, Ayatollah Ramazani touched upon the sublime mystical dimensions of the Ashura movement. He described Imam Husayn (AS) as the perfect embodiment of both divine “majesty” (Jalal) and “beauty” (Jamal). Through his martyrdom, the Imam (AS) revived the splendour, awe, and unyielding strength of the religion against tyrants, while simultaneously manifesting its supreme compassion, love, and beauty for all of humanity.
