Araghchi to UN Chief: Iran Has The Right to Self-Defense
Tehran urges firm international condemnation of US-Israeli aggression as UN chief António Guterres recognizes Iran’s legitimate right to defend itself under international law.
Iran, PUREWILAYAH.COM - Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi held a phone conversation with UN Secretary-General António Guterres, during which he outlined the consequences of the recent American-Zionist aggression against the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Araghchi described multiple aspects of the attacks carried out by U.S. and Israeli forces, stressing that civilian locations were deliberately targeted. According to the Iranian foreign minister, the strikes hit schools, hospitals, residential neighborhoods, and historical buildings and monuments.
He emphasized that such actions represent a clear violation of international law and the fundamental principles of humanitarian law.
Referring to the human toll and the extensive destruction caused by the attacks, Araghchi called on the international community and relevant global institutions to take a firm and explicit stance in condemning these crimes.
Iran Reaffirms Its Inherent Right to Defend Itself
During the conversation, Araghchi underscored that Iran possesses an inherent and legitimate right to defend itself against what he described as an imposed war.
He recalled that the Islamic Republic had previously warned all relevant parties in the region and beyond that any direct military action by the United States against Iran would inevitably lead to Iranian responses targeting U.S. military facilities and bases throughout the region.
Such actions, he stressed, fall within the framework of legitimate self-defense as recognized under international law.
Araghchi further emphasized that safeguarding the security and lives of Iranian citizens remains a fundamental and non-negotiable responsibility of the Iranian state.
Tehran Calls for Stronger UN Action
The Iranian foreign minister also highlighted the responsibilities of the United Nations in maintaining international peace and security.
He stressed that both the Iranian government and the Iranian people expect the UN Secretary-General and the UN Security Council to adopt stronger and more responsible positions in explicitly condemning the aggression and crimes committed.
Araghchi warned that silence or weak responses from international institutions could embolden further violations, increasing instability and tensions across the region.
UN Chief: Iran’s Right to Self-Defense Is Undeniable
For his part, UN Secretary-General António Guterres acknowledged the seriousness of the situation and referred to what he described as the clear aggressive attacks carried out by the United States and the Israeli regime against Iran.
Guterres emphasized the necessity of respecting international law and avoiding further escalation.
He also stated that there is no doubt about Iran’s right to self-defense.
The UN chief further stressed the importance of international efforts aimed at preventing the expansion of the conflict and mitigating its humanitarian and security consequences across the region. (PW)
