The Iranian FM says the memorandum of understanding requires an immediate cessation of hostilities in Lebanon and places responsibility for implementation on Washington and the guarantors
Lebanon, PUREWILAYAH.COM – Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi held separate phone conversations on Monday with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, during which he reviewed the provisions of the memorandum of understanding reached between Iran and the United States, including clauses directly related to Lebanon.
According to the Lebanese presidency, Araghchi and President Aoun discussed recent regional developments and issues of mutual concern, with a particular focus on the implications of the Iran–US understanding.
President Aoun welcomed the agreement reached between Tehran and Washington and expressed hope that it would contribute to reducing tensions across the region and open the way for diplomatic solutions that strengthen regional and international security and stability.
The Lebanese president emphasized that Lebanon’s stability, security, and sovereignty remain a national priority.
For his part, the Iranian Foreign Minister reaffirmed the importance of respecting Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Araghchi also expressed hope that the atmosphere created by the agreement would contribute to Lebanon’s stability and support the country’s recovery and development.
Immediate Halt to Israeli Assault
During a separate conversation with Speaker Nabih Berri, the Iranian Foreign Minister provided additional details about the memorandum of understanding and its provisions concerning Lebanon.
According to Araghchi, the understanding contains a key clause requiring an immediate halt to the Israeli assault on Lebanon.
The Iranian Foreign Minister reportedly stressed that the cessation of hostilities must take effect immediately and remain in force from the first day of the 60-day negotiation period.
He added that ensuring compliance with those commitments is the responsibility of the United States and the guarantors of the memorandum.
Speaker Berri thanked Iran as well as regional and international parties that have supported Lebanon during the current stage.
Lebanese Officials Welcome Agreement
Lebanese political leaders and officials welcomed the memorandum of understanding, particularly the provisions related to ending hostilities in Lebanon.
Both President Aoun and Speaker Berri reportedly viewed the inclusion of a binding commitment to halt the Israeli assault as one of the agreement’s most significant elements.
The development comes amid broader regional efforts to consolidate the ceasefire framework established through the Iran–US understanding and prevent a return to escalation on multiple fronts.
Hezbollah Calls for National Unity
In a separate statement, Hezbollah congratulated the Islamic Republic of Iran, its leadership, and its people on what it described as a significant achievement in reaching an understanding with the United States.
The Lebanese Resistance movement said the current stage requires Lebanese authorities and political forces to strengthen national unity in pursuit of goals shared by all Lebanese.
“This stage requires the authorities and all Lebanese political forces to return to national unity of position in order to achieve objectives agreed upon by all Lebanese, which serve Lebanon’s interest and preserve its sovereignty, strength, and resilience in the face of Israeli ambitions,” Hezbollah said.
The movement also called on Lebanese officials to reassess previous political calculations.
Hezbollah urged the authorities to “benefit from the experience and previous experiences Lebanon has gone through, and move away from illusions and failed bets.”
The group added that maintaining a unified Lebanese position and relying on “true allies” remains the most effective path for safeguarding Lebanon’s national interests.(PW)
