American Analyst: Trump’s Policy Toward Iran Is Impulsive
Lack of a coherent strategy leaves U.S. policy toward Tehran unpredictable, shaped more by domestic politics and emotion than long-term planning
United States, PUREWILAYAH.COM - American researcher and political analyst Kirk Dorsey said that U.S. President Donald Trump’s foreign policy lacks a clear strategic framework, noting that his external conduct toward all actors—including Iran—is driven largely by impulse and emotion.
Dorsey described Trump’s foreign policy as one based on sudden, reactive decisions rather than a coherent intellectual or strategic vision. According to him, this approach keeps all possibilities open, creating uncertainty not only for adversaries but also for U.S. allies.
He added that Trump speaks more frequently than any president he can recall, often without weighing the political consequences of his statements or their broader implications.
Trump’s Iran Stance Driven by Internal U.S. Politics
Dorsey argued that Trump does not display genuine strategic interest in Iran itself. Instead, his posture toward Tehran is shaped primarily by domestic political considerations inside the United States.
He pointed to internal political rivalry and former President Barack Obama’s signing of the 2015 nuclear agreement—the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA)—as key factors driving Trump’s pressure-oriented approach toward Iran.
Addressing Trump’s apparent shift away from threats of action against Iran following recent unrest, Dorsey said the U.S. president appears to have stepped back after realizing that his domestic support base has little appetite for a confrontation with Tehran.
He added that Trump’s close advisers have likely concluded that any confrontation with Iran would be highly uncertain, making it difficult to define achievable outcomes for the United States.
Dorsey concluded that in the absence of a clear foreign policy framework, Trump remains capable of rapidly changing his positions, and further abrupt statements should not come as a surprise. (PW)
