Al-Sudani to UN Secretary-General: Iraq Has Defeated Terrorism, Entering a New Phase

Iraq, PUREWILAYAH.COM — Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani declared that Iraq has emerged victorious over terrorism through the sacrifices of its people, affirming that the country is entering a new phase marked by stability, sovereignty, and balanced international engagement.
Speaking at a joint press conference in Baghdad with UN Secretary-General António Guterres, al-Sudani emphasized that Iraq’s recent parliamentary elections were the most orderly in the country’s modern history, underscoring the maturity of Iraq’s political process.
Al-Sudani stated that Iraq’s success against terrorism was achieved through the blood and sacrifices of its sons, stressing that the government has adopted a balanced policy during a critical period facing the region and the world.
He noted that Iraq’s relationship with the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) remains a central one, clarifying that the conclusion of the mission’s mandate does not signal the end of cooperation.
Rather, Iraq seeks to establish relations with the United Nations based on balance and mutual respect, reflecting Baghdad’s emphasis on sovereignty and equal partnership.
Recognition of UN Positions and Symbolic Steps
The Iraqi prime minister expressed appreciation for the positions taken by the UN Secretary-General in support of Iraq, describing them as a source of pride.
He also welcomed the appointment of former Iraqi President Barham Salih as a UN High Commissioner for Refugees, describing the move as significant.
In a symbolic gesture, al-Sudani announced that one of Baghdad’s streets will be named “United Nations Street” in recognition of the organization’s role and continued support for Iraq.
Guterres: Iraq Is Now a Stable and Normal State
For his part, António Guterres stated that “Iraq today is a different country — secure, stable, and safe.” He congratulated Iraq on the successful conduct of its parliamentary elections and praised the country’s resilience.
Guterres highlighted Iraq’s courage and determination in overcoming terrorism, affirming that the UN’s role had been to support Iraq and its government throughout this process.
The UN Secretary-General said he discussed the situation in Gaza with Prime Minister al-Sudani, including the importance of respecting the ceasefire, within the broader regional context.
He also acknowledged Iraq’s commitment to repatriating its citizens from al-Hol camp, describing this as a responsible and constructive step.
