Al-Sharaa to Visit Moscow, Meet Putin on January 28
Visit highlights continued Damascus–Moscow coordination amid regional uncertainty and fragile internal ceasefire
Syria | PUREWILAYAH.COM — Syrian interim president Ahmad al-Sharaa is scheduled to visit Moscow on January 28, where he is expected to hold talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to a report by Syria TV on Monday.
The visit comes at a time of heightened regional developments and ongoing efforts by Damascus to manage internal security challenges, including a fragile ceasefire between the interim government and the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).
Continued Engagement Between Damascus and Moscow
Russia, a close ally of the ousted President Bashar al-Assad, has also strengthened ties with al-Sharaa since he assumed power 14 months ago. Al-Sharaa told Russian President Vladimir Putin last year that he would honor all previous agreements with Moscow, suggesting that Russia’s main bases in Syria would remain secure.
This comes amid a shaky ceasefire between the SDF and the interim government in Damascus.
In an October meeting, Putin highlighted the enduring and friendly nature of relations between the two countries, reaffirming on Wednesday that Moscow and Damascus share a long-standing partnership built over many decades.
“Our countries have developed special relations over many decades,” he said, expressing his pleasure at welcoming al-Sharaa to the Russian capital. Putin underscored that Russia’s policy toward Syria has never been dictated by political expediency or narrow interests, but by “the interests of the Syrian people.”
The Russian leader also noted that Moscow is prepared to hold regular consultations with Damascus through the Foreign Ministry to further strengthen coordination and cooperation between the two nations. (PW)
