"Al Jazeera Correspondent Anas al-Sharif Killed in Apparent Targeted Strike on Journalists’ Tent in Gaza"
"Strike on Gaza’s media tent silences a fearless voice, deepening fears over a deliberate war on journalism."
Gaza City – PUREWILAYAH.COM — Al Jazeera correspondent Anas al-Sharif was killed on Sunday in an Israeli airstrike that hit a journalists’ gathering point outside al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City. His colleague Mohammed Quraiqa, who worked as a cameraman, was also killed.
According to medical sources cited by both outlets, the strike targeted the media tent where journalists had been covering the situation on the ground. The blast killed and wounded several people, including other reporters.
Al Jazeera described al-Sharif as one of Gaza’s most experienced field correspondents, known for his coverage of northern Gaza throughout the ongoing war. Despite losing his father to an earlier Israeli strike, he had continued reporting from some of the most dangerous areas, often under heavy bombardment.
The network condemned the killing, calling it part of a pattern of attacks on journalists in Gaza since the start of the war. Al Mayadeen noted that this incident is the latest in a series of fatal strikes on media workers, with rights groups warning that such actions threaten press freedom and the ability to document events on the ground.
Witnesses said the attack occurred while journalists were gathered to report on the worsening humanitarian crisis around Gaza’s largest medical complex. Footage from the aftermath showed the tent reduced to rubble, with emergency crews rushing to aid the wounded.
Al Jazeera has vowed to pursue legal action through international bodies, holding Israel accountable for what it described as a “deliberate targeting” of journalists performing their duty. (PW)
