African Union Demands Israel Revoke Recognition of Somaliland
AU Peace and Security Council says unilateral recognition violates Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity
AFRICA | PUREWILAYAH.COM — The Peace and Security Council of the African Union on Tuesday demanded that Israel immediately revoke its recognition of the separatist region of Somaliland, describing the move as a blatant violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Somalia Federal Republic.
In a statement published on the X platform following a ministerial-level meeting, the council expressed its strongest condemnation of what it described as Israel’s “unilateral recognition of the so-called Republic of Somaliland.”
AU Rejects Any Action Undermining Africa’s Borders
The Peace and Security Council stressed its categorical rejection of any measures that undermine the unity of African states or infringe upon their internationally recognized borders.
It called on Israel to immediately reverse its recognition, reaffirming the African Union’s firm and unwavering position in support of Somalia’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.
Recognition Sparks Regional and International Backlash
The Israeli occupation formally recognized the separatist region on 26 December, declaring it an “independent and sovereign state.”
The decision triggered sharp criticism from the African Union, Egypt, and the European Union, all of which reaffirm Somalia’s sovereignty—particularly amid the ongoing war and instability facing the country. (PW)
