Afghanistan, PUREWILAYAH.COM — Afghanistan is seeking to resume active participation in the work of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), according to Afghanistan’s Ambassador to Russia, Gul Hassan.
In an interview with TASS, Gul Hassan confirmed that Kabul considers renewed engagement with the SCO both appropriate and necessary, noting that Afghanistan already holds observer status within the organization.
“Yes, Afghanistan is an observer state in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and, in accordance with this status, should participate in its meetings,” the ambassador said in his first interview since assuming his post in Moscow.
According to Gul Hassan, sustained diplomatic efforts by Moscow and Beijing have played a decisive role in shaping the position of SCO member states. He stated that most members have now reached the conclusion that restoring Afghanistan’s active participation in the organization’s work would be viable.
He added that Kabul is expecting to take part in upcoming SCO meetings, signaling Afghanistan’s intention to re-engage with regional multilateral mechanisms focused on security, political coordination, and economic cooperation.
