2 National Guard Troops in Critical Condition After Shooting Near White House
Suspect identified and in custody as authorities confirm attack was targeted; White House briefly locked down
United States, PUREWILAYAH.COM — Two National Guard soldiers remain in critical condition after being shot near the White House on Wednesday afternoon, despite earlier reports mistakenly announcing the death of one of the service members. The suspect, who was wounded during the exchange of gunfire, has been identified and is currently in police custody.
The misleading reports of a soldier’s death were corrected on Thursday, with officials confirming that both victims are alive but in severe condition.
Shooting Near White House Sparks Emergency Lockdown
The incident occurred at approximately 2:15 p.m. local time near the intersection of 17th Street and I Street NW, only a few blocks from the White House.
At the time, President Donald Trump was in Florida, participating in remote Thanksgiving engagements with U.S. troops.
The proximity of the attack triggered a temporary lockdown of the White House and prompted a rapid, multi-agency response involving the Secret Service, FBI, Metropolitan Police, and federal tactical units.
Troops Targeted During High-Visibility Patrol
According to Metropolitan Police Assistant Chief Jeff Carroll, the two soldiers were conducting a high-visibility security patrol when an armed suspect approached and opened fire without warning.
Other National Guard members returned fire, wounding the attacker, who was then subdued and taken into custody. Authorities have not yet released the suspect’s identity but confirmed he is being questioned.
Both Soldiers Hospitalized in Critical Condition
FBI Director Kash Patel stated that both injured troops were rushed to nearby trauma centers and remain in critical condition under intensive medical care.
Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser described the incident as “a targeted attack”, emphasizing that investigators have found no indication that the shooting was random.
Trump Responds With Condolences and Support
During a Thanksgiving video call with U.S. forces, President Trump addressed the incident directly, referring to one of the wounded soldiers as a “highly respected, young, magnificent person.” He noted that the situation remained serious:
“The other young man is fighting for his life. He’s in very bad shape.”
The President did not provide further details but expressed full support for the troops and the ongoing investigation.
Investigation Expands as Motive Remains Unclear
Federal and local authorities continue to examine the suspect’s background, possible affiliations, and motive. Investigators are reviewing surveillance footage, interviewing witnesses, and conducting a forensic sweep of the scene.
Law enforcement officials have not ruled out terrorism, political violence, or targeted retaliation, but emphasized that no conclusions have been reached.
More updates are expected as officials provide new information on the condition of the wounded soldiers and the outcome of the investigation.
