Iran is gearing up for the eleventh parliamentary election.

Based on the latest estimates from the Interior Ministry, nearly 58 million people are eligible to vote for their representatives in the election.

Voters say there will be a high-key competition amongst principlists and reformers despite the large number of disqualifications by the election watchdog, the Guardian Council.

Under the Iranian constitution, people are free to vote directly for candidates who represent their interests.

The election will be held in over 200 constituencies and in 31 provinces.

The new parliament will have 290 members who will be elected by the people for a four-year term.

Almost 16,000 people registered to compete for the 290 parliamentary seats.

The reformists currently occupy 41 percent of the parliament seats, while the principlists are in possession of 29 percent of the seats.

The rest belongs to the independents and minorities, including Zoroastrians, Jews, Assyrian, Christians and Armenians.

About 3 million people will be voting for the first time in the eleventh parliamentary election that will take place on February 21
