Palestinian human rights organizations along with the Gaza Bar Association have held a press conference at the site of the bombarded Sawarkah family home in the central Gaza Strip town of Deir al-Balah. Israeli warplanes bombed the Sawarkah family home early Thursday morning, killing eight members of the same family, including five children.

The Israeli military claimed it made a mistake in targeting the Sawarkah residence because it believed the building was empty.

The killing of the eight Sawarkah family members brought to 34 the number of deaths in Israel’s latest onslaught against the Gaza Strip that began with the assassination of top Islamic Jihad military commander Baha Abu Al Atta early Tuesday morning.

The Israeli attack on the Sawarkah family took place a few hours before a ceasefire came into effect on Thursday morning.  During the Israeli airstrikes that lasted for nearly fifty hours, over 100 Palestinians were injured including dozens of children and women.

Palestine became a state party to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC) in April 2015.

The ICC has jurisdiction over war crimes, genocide and crimes against humanity.

Rights groups have long accused the Israeli regime of deliberately targeting Palestinian civilians.

They are calling on the international community to hold Tel Aviv accountable for its crimes
