A long-delayed intelligence report by the United States into the gruesome killing of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi did not contain any major revelations, but did agree with the widespread assessment that the murder was ordered by Mohammad bin Salman, the 35-year-old Saudi Arabian crown prince widely considered the de facto ruler of the kingdom.  While on the election campaign new US President Joe Biden called Saudi Arabia a “pariah” state with “no redeeming social value.” However, he ultimately blocked any penalties or visa ban on the crown prince despite the report’s admission that the US has credible information that he committed a gross human rights abuse.

That has many saying that the shocking assassination will have had no change on the extremely close ties between Washington and the far-right Saudi monarchy.  Biden called the crown prince’s father, King Salman, before the report’s release, but reportedly only to stress the strength of their bilateral ties and their mutual antagonism towards Iran.

Shortly afterwards, Biden then bombed the first country of his presidency - Syria - with deadly and illegal air strikes.
