Across South Korea vaccination against COVID-19 began with more than 5,000 nursing home residents and care providers scheduled to get their jabs by the end of the day. President Moon Jae-in observed people getting their shots, seeking to encourage people to be vaccinated when it's their turn.

South Korean officials say the country should achieve herd immunity by November of this year.

Herd immunity is achieved when a high percentage of people have been immunized, preventing the spread of a contagious disease.

But about half of South Koreans surveyed are hesitant to get their shots.

South Korea had been successful in limiting the spread of COVID-19 during the initial outbreak a year ago, but has seen waves of the virus infect hundreds of people each day since November last year.

In addition to vaccine hesitancy, Seoul’s November goal for herd immunity may also be complicated by supply chain challenges and drug-resistant variants of COVID-19, with a return to normality more likely in 2022
