Afghan health officials say a lack of awareness of the novel coronavirus among the population and their disregard for health instructions have paved the way for the rapid spread of the virus across the country. Estimates suggest about 80 percent of the Afghan population will be affected by COVID-19 in case they continue ignoring health instructions.

In the meantime, there are also talks about a possible lockdown of some big cities, including the capital Kabul due to the rapid spread of the new coronavirus.

Dozens of infections have been confirmed in 29 out of 34 provinces in Afghanistan while four foreign military personnel have tested positive for COVID-19.

Herat is one of the hardest-hit provinces where the first coronavirus infection was reported on February 24.

Afghanistan's health ministry confirms that the Taliban have given the green light to healthcare workers to get to the areas controlled by the militants for COVID-19 measures, including launching public awareness programs and testing individuals suspected of carrying the deadly virus
