From north to south, Italy has seen dozens of demonstrations against coronavirus restrictions since the country's central and regional governments reinforced measures to contain the coronavirus pandemic while daily infections in the country are on the rise. The number of COVID cases has been surging in Italy for several days, surpassing the 20,000 mark on Sunday, although new daily infections dropped by over 4,000 a day later. In this second wave of infections, Italy's central government has authorized regional governors to order restrictions such as overnight curfews.

The local officials in the regions surrounding Rome, Milan, and Naples have already imposed a midnight to 5 a.m.

curfew aimed at halting a rapid resurgence of COVID-19 infections. Angered by an overnight curfew and new national restrictions for cafes, restaurants, and public gatherings, thousands of people in Naples rushed to the city center on Monday, chanting slogans against the lockdowns. Thousands of demonstrators also took to the streets of the northern city of Turin, while hundreds of retailers and small business owners rallied outside the Italian parliament in the capital, Rome. A recent official decree has ordered gyms, swimming pools, cinemas, and theaters to close while cafes and restaurants have been obliged to shut down at 6 p.m.

These measures are valid until November 24. It seems that the rift is deepening between those who have the resources to cope with the restrictions and others who have lost their business or job because of the lockdowns.

This could be a prelude to a bleak future ahead.
